Twisted Tales Cosmetics lipsticks review

Hi! what’s up? 🙂

Since last Monday I received my order from Twisted Tales Cosmetics, I think it’s about time I post my review! It’s gonna be long so grab some snacks and let’s begin!

Let me tell you a little bit about Twisted Tales Cosmetics. They are a Canadian lipstick brand whose goal is to encourage women to embrace their womanhood and be who they truly are. They want to empower women of all ages through their bold lipsticks, which is such a nice goal. I think that this message is truly beautiful and empowering. Women face a different and difficult reality and we must embrace our womanhood and normalize the natural things about us that others consider “gross” or  “inappropiate”.

I had the chance to talk to Samantha, the creator of Twisted Tales Cosmetics and she was happy to solve all of my doubts about their lipsticks. They are a cruelty free company but not vegan because their formula contains lanolin, which comes from wool and the sebaceous glands of some mammals. I do appreciate the fact that they are cruelty free, I think all cosmetic brands and all brands in general should avoid animal testing at all costs. But that’s another topic I will not be discussing here!
Samantha also told me that the key ingredients in their lipsticks, in addition to lanolin are the following:

  • castor seed oil
  • lanolin oil
  • carnauba wax
  • candelilla wax
  • palmitoyl oligopeptide (palm tree oil)
  • apricot kernel oil
  • natural vanillin extract
  • Vitamin E

All of these ingredients in combination provide a long lasting moisturizing effect on the lips. I kinda had a rough time with these though 😦 I really liked them but I had an allergic reaction to them and had to give them to my mom, I’ll tell you all about it at the end of this post.

Now I’ll talk about the lipsticks themselves.

This is how they look like, the tube comes in a black unicarton

The packaging is very minimalistic and luxurious at the same time. The tube is heavy and it does feel expensive. I really like the packaging, it’s very simple yet so classy. They contain 4g/0.14 us oz and they retail for C$22 each (USD $18, 15€). They have free shipping on orders over $65, which means that if you order 3 lipsticks, you won’t have to pay shipping costs. They also ship worldwide.

They smell SO GOOD. Seriously, they smell sweet, like vanilla or something like this, it’s amazing. I love the smell, I would love that all my lipsticks could smell like these, for real.

I took a look around the website and their instagram profile before picking my shades because I wanted to see how they looked like in real pictures since the ones in the website are digitally edited images I believe. The shades look a little different in real life so that’s why I suggest that you look at their instagram pictures before picking the shade 🙂

The ones I picked were ‘T’ruffle dem feathers‘ and ‘Pumpkin by midnight‘.

‘T’ruffle dem feathers’ is one of those loud nude lipsticks as I like to call them. It’s a nude colour but a little bit more warm toned. It’s one of those flattering shades that make you look instantly pretty and put together. If I had to compare this shade I would say it’s really really similar to Nyx Lingerie’s Exotic. It’s a great everyday lipstick shade, I really loved this one. Really, I think it’s the perfect shade for my skin tone, I love it so much! 😦 It applies evenly and it’s really pigmented and creamy. It also feels very moisturizing as well, it was very comfortable to wear. The finish is a comfortable satin matte finish. It’s not transfer proof and it comes off when you drink, kiss or eat. It behaves just as a regular tube lipstick, but stays put for a decent amount of time and it doesn’t bleed.

Gosh I love how it looks on me. It’s just MY shade

Pumpkin by midnight‘ was the shade I was the most excited about. It’s an orange red and it’s a very special shade. I love how vintage it looks. I think it’s the perfect shade for those times when you want to wear a red lipstick but don’t want the typical bold blue-toned red. This one is a red that you could wear pretty much for any ocassion. However, this one was a bit less pigmented than T’ruffle dem feathers. It was more sheer and a tiny pit patchy, but you can make it work with a couple more layers. It looks very pretty and classy though. The finish of this one was a little bit different than T’ruffle dem feathers. It’s more of a creamy matte finish, more vibrant and shiny as you can see in the pictures. Since it’s more sheer, the lasting power is more similar to that of a lip balm, at least in my experience. Although I couldn’t wear this shade for a very long time.

This one wasn’t the most flattering for my skin tone but it was still very pretty nevertheless

Now, let’s go on to the rough part 😦 I wore them for about 4-5 hours. Then, when I took off my makeup I noticed that my lips were a little bit red. I didn’t give it that much importance until next morning. I was applying my makeup in front of the mirror and when I was putting on T’ruffle dem feathers I noticed some bumps in my lips. I instantly removed the lipstick and then I could see it clearly. I got these zits or bumps or whatever you want to call them all over my lips!!!!!!! And they looked irritated and swollen as well. I panicked a little bit and then I was just angry. Equally angry about the fact that I couldn’t wear my new beloved lipsticks and angry about the fact that my lips looked like a mess. I looked at my hands and the parts where I applied the lipstick were also red and had a rash. The swelling has disappeared but the bumps are still there. I really hope they disappear completely, otherwise I’ll have to go visit my allergologist. This was obviously bad luck. This doesn’t mean that the lipsticks are bad or anything, they have in fact very good quality and are dermatologically tested. If you are prone to allergic reactions I would encourage you to read the ingredients before buying any cosmetic product so that you can avoid these kind of trouble.

I gave the lipsticks to my mom and she looks stunning with T’ruffle dem feathers!! She tried both of the lipsticks and didn’t have an allergic reaction to them so you can see that it’s not because of the lipsticks, it was because of me.

All in all, I do recommend this brand, they want to spread such a beautiful and thoughtful message and their lipsticks are great quality. Despite the fact that I cannot wear them, I believe that the formula is quite good and the shades are truly beautiful. You should definitely try them out!

Thanks for reading! This one was hella long, I hope I didn’t bore you too much. I really hope you liked my review and found it useful 🙂 Have a great day!

xoxo
